What constitutes a trauma?
Most people are unaware they have experienced a "trauma" because it is often compared to "traumatic events" seen on TV or online. Trauma is often misunderstood. Both big and little traumas exist, and the degree to which they affect a person is based individually. What is traumatic to one may not be traumatic to another. Trauma is believed by many therapists to be "the root of everything." From this perspective, most current distress, disorders, and obstacles are due to trauma.
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. According to the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), "Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders."
"EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies."
What is DeTUR for EMDR Therapy?
Desensitization of Triggers and Urge Reprocessing (DeTUR) is an urge protocol within EMDR Therapy. DeTUR targets the triggers that surface uncomfortable feelings that lead to urges (addiction and dysfunctional behaviors, i.e. self-harm, OCD, disordered eating, and more). All addiction and dysfunctional behavior stems from trauma. The purpose of DeTUR is to uncover the core trauma and reprocess.
